A group of older gentlemen from a car club in Oroville Ca. wanted to come here and look around, which I generally allow. After looking around at the yard, they met me at the office here, and the one man mentioned "There's Christine's air cleaners" pointing at a pair of chrome ovals I have setting there.

These men were in their 70's, not the typical age for people to be aware of details from the movie. I got to talking to him, and he seemed to know quite a bit about the movie cars. It turned out that he worked at Bill and Ed's wrecking yard when the movie cars and parts were brought in. He said that he had set one of the cars aside for himself, it had the trunk floor cut out and the radiator mounted in the rear, but he said the rest of the car was in good condition. Unfortunately, he did not let his boss know, and while at lunch, the car was picked up by the roof with a forklift and set on top of a car pile. It ruined the roof, and was not pursued by this man for that reason.

He did remember a few teenagers scrounging through the parts, and remembers one of the cars being hauled out from the yard, which was probably Martin's future Christine.

I did get his telephone number, and he said it would be OK if Martin or Bill was interested in calling him, but he was on a limited phone program [minutes] and couldn't talk a long time.

That's too cool, too bad he couldn't save the car.
Maybe he remembers some more interesting stories?

Maybe you should show him these photos:

I'm not sure if any was painted on, as there were rolls pf aluminum they used to create inserts for the movie cars.

I seem to recall it mentioned that there was a roller press that would emboss a pattern onto the aluminum sheets which they used in the movie. I'll have to see if I can remember where I heard it.

These photos were taken on-set by Malcolm (Moochie Welch) Danare, which appear to show the stripe painted on, at least on this tow vehicle...

I agree. Those look like they are painted on. At least without any pattern.

That's a pretty grainy old photo though. With as bright as new aluminum would be, I can see the detail being lost in the image of that low quality.

Even looking at modern day pics of cars that I know have inserts, I can't see a pattern unless it's an image that was taken extremely close.

Now maybe they really are painted on. I'm just saying I think one would be hard pressed to tell without a real close look.

The aluminum they used had a diamond embossing, rather than the squares the factory used.

A fellow in Canada, Marcel, used to sell this for use in movie clone cars. I haven't seen his ads on E-bay for some time, so not sure if he has any left.

I've seen Marcel's inserts in the past on eBay, too, but not recently.

Those look great! It's probably good I have a '57, otherwise I might be compelled to buy a set.

Are you dropping the money for the inserts Rob?

Not at this stage; I just dropped 400 USD on the set of fiberglass bumper wings from Manos.

Also, my 57 is a 4-door, and I don't know if Marcus makes a set for those body types; I may check with him later to see if he makes such a thing.

Well good luck with things there Rob and please report back to tell us what you found. Have you asked Jim Rawa about the inserts for your car?

Actually, I have...I'm friends with Jim on Facebook, and he's been extremely helpful in guidance on rebuilding/restoring my car.

Unfortunately, Jim's currently not producing/stocking the inserts for the 4-doors right now; he said he might start reproducing some sets in the future, and when he does (and makes the announcement), I'll try to be the first on his list.

Jim is good about a lot of stuff, he'll have those inserts put into production most likely when enough orders come through.
