    '59 Dodge Custom Royal hardtop

While at the Reno swap meet, an older man came up to me and pointed at my Plymouth. He said he had a neighbor that has a '59 Dodge, he had helped him push it out of his garage years ago so he could do some cleaning and he was now considering selling it.

I went down to Roseville [near Sacramento] Monday to look at it, the owner told me it was his uncle that bought it new in Kansas, drove it out to Oregon, and the nephew picked it up in the early eighties when his uncle fell ill. I could tell that he did not want to get rid of the car, but he needed the one bay garage to work on his fishing boat, so he reluctantly agreed to sell it to me. It hadn't been started in better than 20 years, he seemed to think there was a burnt valve in the engine, but i'll find out this weekend when I have some free time to play with it.

All I had time for last night was to remove the plug from the fuel tank. Banging on the bottom of the tank it seemed like there as a lot of old gas inside, but when I removed the plug, only about a gallon and a half of goo gas came out.

Did some more work on the car yesterday, after jacking the car up on stands, I found not just one soft plug gone, but 4 in the block and two in each cylinder head. I had enough of the replacement plugs for the block in my parts bin, but none for the heads. I replaced all the lower ones, and had a friend pick the remainder up at Motor Sales here.
In the meantime, I decided to determine why the car was starving for fuel, it would run for a short bit after filling the float bowl in the carb, and then die. I disconnected the inlet fuel line at the pump, and blew compressed air back to the tank. Nothing. I removed the short piece of rubber hose at the tank, and it was plugged with solidified varnish. The metal line to the pump was clear. I also removed the sending unit, and found it was corroded and also plugged solid. I found a clean one in another tank, and installed it. Now it would start and run.

My friend got back then with the cylinder head soft plugs, I replaced the two on the driver's side, and after seeing that the exhaust manifold would have to be removed to access one on the other side, I decided to see why the car had a rough idle. Pulling plug wires from the cap while running, number 6 cylinder did not drop any RPM's. I did a compression check, and found only 25 PSI compression. A leakdown test showed air escaping from the tailpipe, so it was, like the previous owner stated, a burnt exhaust valve. Oh well, it would be easier to replace the soft plugs with the head off.
