    1961 Dodge Phoenix

This car rose up from the asses, er, ashes I mean, and is called Phoenix!

I picked up this 1961 Dodge Dart Phoenix in northern Alabama last week.

I bought it from the builder, an older guy who is into Mopars, mainly 1970-80s era. This was a package deal he got, the body of the Phoenix and a 1987 Chrysler 5th Avenue with no title. He drove the Chrysler to his shop and used it as a donor to get the Phoenix back on the road.
He took the entire front frame from the 5th Ave and had it professionally welded into the sub frame of the Phoenix. He refreshed the 318 and transmission with new seals and put them in the car, along with new wiring. Basically, the car is a 5th Avenue with a 1961 Dodge body!

Kinda got the "nascar" theme going....

    UFO styling!

I put this steering wheel on, the other was a hideous wheel from a 70s dart.

Unfortunately, a period wheel won't fit, as the column is later model. I'd like to at least find a late 60s wheel with full horn ring.

The seller got some grief for cutting up a good radio delete plate to add the aftermarket gauges.

The seats were recovered some time ago, still useable for me as is.

    The mighty 318 plant!

You can tell the handiwork of an old hot rodder, the battery in the trunk!

She drives really well, I plan to finish off a few items such as carpet and ride. I'm not crazy about the wheels/tires, but I've got something in mind for that.

I just had to take this photo, this was in Fort Payne, AL, where I picked up the car.

I dig the style of the restaurant, I wonder what it was originally....

I likey Pete, she looks cool with the red wheels too. I see only one issue though, there are two too many cylinders. I hope your not getting a taste of the V8's. I will then be the only six pot nut on here.

No need to worry, Dean, I'm still partial to the slanted 6, my first love. However, you've gone off the deep end with those flatties!

Austin, there's a thread on the Comet somewhere here, I bought that at the end of March.

    Ah yes, Eddie, if only...

    Thanks for the comments!

I pulled my wallet out for some improvements....

First, some new carpet from ACC. I got it out of the box and let it relax for a few days.
It is a molded carpet, but it is easier to have it extended before trying to lay it in the car.

Took out the seats, always a fun task when doing alone!

I ordered some new lap seatbelts from JC Whitney and installed in for the rear seat.
    Red to match the carpet!

    Rear carpet installed.

Front carpet installed, as well as seat mounting brackets and bolts for the seat belts.

It is easier to jam the seatbelts through the front seat when its out of the car.

Only had to cut a hole for the dimmer switch and a slit at the top of the transmission hump under the firewall.

The original looking heel pad is part of the carpet; good stuff.

This is all that i had to trim for a nice fit!

    Installed!

I also splurged on a cup holder/console that rests on the seat.
I've got a green one in my brown wagon and love it. No more coffee cups between the legs!

Next, some big bucks flew away when this arrived by Fed Ex!

    Four brand-new Coker 215/75 R15 2-1/2" wides!

She sure looks like a UFO with no wheels on the ground!

    Bam!

I went with the 2-1/2" because of the wheels being 15"; I wanted something sort-of period looking, but with the drive-ability
of radials. These are Coker brand, not Goodrich or such. A little cheaper, so we'll see how they hold up.

The more I look at her rear, the more I think she just needs a little something....

    Here, this should do it!

Perhaps the "Dodge" letters would help?
